Long term acute care hospitals
Two new hospitals proposed for Collier for specialized
The privately held Landmark Hospitals, headquartered in Cape Girardeau, Mo., has submitted a letter of intent to the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration that it will pursue state approval to build a 50 bed long term acute care hospital in Naples.
Kindred Healthcare, a for profit company based in Louisville, Ky., that operates long term acute hospitals and nursing homes, submitted its letter during a grace period after the initial February letter deadline and proposes building a 40 bed hospital.

Landmark Chairman Dr. William Kapp, an orthopedic surgeon, said his company has been exploring the market potential of Southwest Florida, particularly in Naples, for a year. He also owns a seasonal home in Naples.
The intent is to build near NCH Healthcare System's North Naples Hospital, he said.
"So we have been in discussion with people who own land in that region," Kapp said, adding that he's spoken with officials at both NCH and the Lee Memorial Health System in Lee County about the proposed project.
Kapp said both NCH and Lee Memorial are supportive of Landmark's plans.
"We've done a lot of ground work," he said.
Kapp said a federal moratorium against new long term care acute hospitals is due to expire shortly.
Blake Gable, vice president of Barron Collier Cos., confirmed there's been discussion with one of the two long term acute care hospital operators interested in the local market.
Mike Reagen, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, said he hadn't heard about the two companies' interest in Naples but it bodes well for the local economy, even if it is demographics driven and not classic economic diversification.
"We are living longer and more people are coming (here)," Reagen said. "In terms of economic development, it is a good thing."

"We help unburden the hospital (for patients) who take longer to get better," Kapp said. "Our average length of stay is 25 to 30 days."
He said construction costs for the 50 bed hospital would be about $14 million, not including land costs.

Its annual revenue is $6 billion and in its fourth quarter earnings for 2011, the company reported that its long term acute care hospital revenue rose 40 percent and admissions grew 4 percent.
Paul Diaz, Kindred president and chief executive officer, stated in a Feb. 14 press release that its focus for the current year is on integrated care in local markets.

In Florida, Kindred operates 10 long term acute care hospitals, including three in the Tampa Bay area and four in the South Florida region.
